Twice now I’ve been on a ride with a particular friend who has been pulled and issued an infringement notice for speed.

The first time we pulled out of an intersection on to a main road – his radar detector had gone off, we accelerated up to the speed limit and sat on it. We could all see the Police car several 100 meters up the road, the cop was across the road ticketing some chap in a 4x4 Toyota I believe –The cop saw us coming, ran across the road to his patrol car leaned in and then stood in the middle of the road and to our utter amassment pulled my friend out of the middle of four bikes and ticketed him for 117. What the ……. There’s no way anyone was doing 117, I suspect he never reset his radar from pulling over the 4x4, and how could he select one out of 4 bikes anyway?

But my friend paid the bill

Last night we were cruising – his radar detector goes off, quick check on speed – we’re ok. Round the next corner is a Police car, she flicked on her lights and did a u-turn, right in front of me as it happens, I had to slam on my brakes to avoid ‘T-boning’ her, she then pulls my friend over and does him for 114!!!!

I know with out a doubt I was sitting on 100 to 105 tops as we rounded that corner, all three of us riding close together. He knew she was there because his detector had gone off and had checked his speed. One other added complication was a 4th bike (unknown to us) closing on us fairly quickly as we rounded the corner – again did this give the cop a false reading??

Question should he put up an appeal and fight it – or take the view that even though it was not deserved, there were plenty of time he has exceeded the speed limit so he should just pay it?

the real question is . .was the cop hot? and did you get her number?

maybe the speedo is out, i would see if it can test asap,
test it against a gps, if can confirm its out get it tested by approved place, and send that notice to police saying speedo is out, unaware to you. and try that

the speedo has been replace on this viffer ... its a good point cajun has, and could build a good argument against the fine

I like the idea... but, will the "Approved place" cost less than the 80 notes for the fine.
The result of a comparison to a GPS may not actually work in my favour. If I ride at 110 GPS says ~106 so I usually ride with a bit of margin !!
Oh and I had the GPS on board and well to protect the innocent !! I cant divulge what it said!!
At the end of the day when you come up to an unknown vehicle and suddenly u'r detector goes off, you are snapped. If her radar had been left on yes I would have been alerted sooner and taken appropirate action.
But basically, She must have seen the lights and flicked radar on so I was in her beam as soon as she fired it up.
It does make one wonder about option #4. Plenty of possibilities from where we were. If I had been alone or with Paul! could have made a gap.
Funily enough at around 4 this morning I heard siren, then another, and more.. etc heading on Kaikatea Drive, so woken to that, option 4 ..

how many demerits are you sitting on?
that would decide for whether the argument is worth it

I think my speedo must be out - I'm sure we were doing no more than 105 around those bends
Does a different number of teeth on your rear sprocket change your speedo? My bandit has an RF rear sprocket

Depends where your speedo pickup is. If its NOT on the front wheel then the gearing WILL make a difference.

Next time we are out throw your tank bag on and you can baby-sit the GPS. It will tell you all you need to know smile.gif

Also I bought a new battery from Boyds this afternoon. Bike was getting a bit troublesome trying to get across town!
The negative battery post was getting looser sad.gif
I need to see when I bought that battery. It wasnt that long ago....

I got a ticket years ago for 56 on River road, my speedo was out by 4 k's cost me $65 dollars back then to have my speedo checked, only to be told I still needed to pay the fine as I still would've been speeding
In the last 10 years I have got one for 116 overtaking a truck on double lanes
Got one for 111 on the Mamaku's straights
One for 90mph in Wales

Years ago I got a ticket for going thru an amber, appealed and lost, lost the next appeal at District Court, then took it to the High Court where I not only won but was awarded costs. The result of the court hearing was a change in NZ legislation!!! I was pissed off that when I sat my licence the law said you could proceed if you felt it was unsafe to stop, however they changed the law to say if your not within 5 m you have to stop. No one told me I argued. The other point I successfully argued was the escalation (doubling) of the fine each time you appealed and lost, as a result this no longer happens, it was an obstruction to justice and put motorist in the position of being guilty until they prove their innocence .

If it were me, I would argue that because my bike can do 102km/h in 1st gear alone, that it's hard keeping it down to a 'legal' speed once I change up. haha. tongue.gif
But yeah...simple answer....revenue. Cops needa focus on real crime in this country. Just watch the news. nono.gif

As Smokey can probably say I tend to abuse the speed limit when riding but only safely. The last time I got close to getting a ticket was with a speed camera when riding with R6in on the way to Thames. I just pulled out and pasted the car in front of me and smiled and waved as the flasher went every body else hit the brakes, not the best thing to do as it indicates that you know you are speeding. But in saying all this the police do have bad days when they just want to get there quota up. I feel if you are riding dangeous then you deserve the ticket if not then fight against the ticket. If you write to Wellington where you pay the ticket to, The worse they can say is you have to pay or they will let you off.
