four points at the end of the month. that will have my riding fix for this month without doing the grand challenge. Next year I am definitely probably doing it. Maybe.
We have been talking about the southern cross. Meanie is doing it. not sure if I can fund it yet. Looks like fun though.

Safe bet we'll be leaving Turangi just after 3 on saturday arvo and back around lunchtime on Sunday...
Taking a stab: haven't done the Waioeka for a while, maybe the 'naki, doubt we'll be going north after last year...who knows what evil plan is waiting to be hatched by the Rustys...

More than once for sure. One year we did big loops coming back through Turangi a couple of times - was quite a good one that. The route's always got some out of the way back roads in it - good to get off the main roads and try out the old navigation skills.

Some rough stats:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p6Z...Q_vap3KEuNQnBaADistances, times, speeds give an idea of how tough it was. Once I post the map (a long process and I'm having computer issues) you'll see why.
104 entries, 30 DNF's.

nice. <$200 is surprisingly cheap. Cost me $61 to do 460km on the weekend. I was 2up and not being really 'tame' on the throttle for bits of that. A better idea of fuel economy will be this weekend when we get some long stretches under our belts.
banditrider
20 Oct 2008, 09:39 PM
Not included is the full tank I started with at Turangi or the fuel getting up & back. The idea of the spreadsheet was more about the times - maybe I'll add the other info when I've had some zzzzzzz...
Vista sux!

Just because I was bored and playing with a new toy I punched the GC '08 route into the Zumo (directly, no Mapsource). Assuming I entered it all correctly it came up with bang on 1600km and a time of 21 hours, 14 minutes. It's just a machine and doesn't take into account stops, weather, tiredness or anything so actually makes our 22 hours not seem so bad.
Really looking forward to this year's GC where hopefully the Zumo will do the navigating and it'll be interesting to see if we can stay "on time".
On my recent trip to Auckland it was easy to beat the Zumo's times and we did the 1,070km easily in only 11 hours, 25 minutes. In fact our trip was less than 24 hours and we spent 9 hours at the motel and had numerous stops. It just goes to show how much more difficult the GC routes are...and then throw in some weather...
So who else is coming this year?

18 Jan 2009, 10:20 PM
you need to discover the world of cafe drinking. that will make the grand challenge more of a challenge for you.
