four points at the end of the month. that will have my riding fix for this month without doing the grand challenge. Next year I am definitely probably doing it. Maybe.

We have been talking about the southern cross. Meanie is doing it. not sure if I can fund it yet. Looks like fun though.

Dunno, it's a pretty basic one. I'm a slow texted too..

Safe bet we'll be leaving Turangi just after 3 on saturday arvo and back around lunchtime on Sunday... wink.gif

Taking a stab: haven't done the Waioeka for a while, maybe the 'naki, doubt we'll be going north after last year...who knows what evil plan is waiting to be hatched by the Rustys...
cowboyz

More than once for sure. One year we did big loops coming back through Turangi a couple of times - was quite a good one that. The route's always got some out of the way back roads in it - good to get off the main roads and try out the old navigation skills.
cowboyz
you mean it requires navigation? Im out then!
banditrider
Follow the Connie - have only gotten lost a couple of times...
banditrider
Bags packed, ready to rock! Outta here after lunch. Pretty sure the weather is going to sort itself out for the ride so fingers crossed. You'll hear all about it Monday...
TerminalAddict
good luck dude party.gif

Back now - feeling a bit better than I did at this time yesterday. Planning on drawing up the route in google maps shortly and writing up the ride for my website.

A quick blog here: http://banditrider.blogspot.com/2008/10/20...-challenge.html

Glad to see you're back ok, bummer about you're mate Steve though, look forward to reading the full ride report.
cowboyz
congrats for finishing another one. looking forward to the full report.
banditrider
Some rough stats: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p6Z...Q_vap3KEuNQnBaA

Distances, times, speeds give an idea of how tough it was. Once I post the map (a long process and I'm having computer issues) you'll see why.

104 entries, 30 DNF's.
cowboyz
We're sorry, lance.broyden@xtra.co.nz does not have permission to access this spreadsheet.

banditrider
Oops, told ya I was having computer issues. Try this: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p6Z...Q_vap3KEuNQnBaA
cowboyz
nice. <$200 is surprisingly cheap. Cost me $61 to do 460km on the weekend. I was 2up and not being really 'tame' on the throttle for bits of that. A better idea of fuel economy will be this weekend when we get some long stretches under our belts.
banditrider
Not included is the full tank I started with at Turangi or the fuel getting up & back. The idea of the spreadsheet was more about the times - maybe I'll add the other info when I've had some zzzzzzz...

Vista sux!
cowboyz
yes it does.
banditrider
Looks like I may have managed to get the computer running ok now. So I've finished the route map:

The Google Earth file is here, can someone let me know if it works please.
TerminalAddict
yep .. google earth file works sweet as.

nice route .. all roads I know fairly well, and the weather didn't look too bad from where I was standing .

I'll keep an eye open for your full report wink.gif
banditrider
Yep, great route, but tough.

Rough and ready write-up here: http://andrew.l.thomson.googlepages.com/2008grandchallenge
TerminalAddict
nice dude .. top notch effort again wink.gif

Pity about feeling sick

I better let smoky know that his bandit can run on diesel ok .. that could save him heaps biggrin.gif

banditrider
More write-ups here: http://www.rustynuts.co.nz/default.aspx?PageID=421

Including one from the dude who ran his Bandit on Diesel...
banditrider
And the latest Rusty Trumpet is here: http://www.rustynuts.co.nz/default.aspx?PageID=4

Even got some details on the 10,000km in 10 days...
cowboyz
awesome stuff. 10k in 10 days. I thought about it for 10 seconds and went fuck that. Have to arrange tyre changes and extra padding for the seat with that.

GC09 though. I am going to be there.
banditrider
Bring spongbob.
banditrider
Just because I was bored and playing with a new toy I punched the GC '08 route into the Zumo (directly, no Mapsource). Assuming I entered it all correctly it came up with bang on 1600km and a time of 21 hours, 14 minutes. It's just a machine and doesn't take into account stops, weather, tiredness or anything so actually makes our 22 hours not seem so bad.

Really looking forward to this year's GC where hopefully the Zumo will do the navigating and it'll be interesting to see if we can stay "on time".

On my recent trip to Auckland it was easy to beat the Zumo's times and we did the 1,070km easily in only 11 hours, 25 minutes. In fact our trip was less than 24 hours and we spent 9 hours at the motel and had numerous stops. It just goes to show how much more difficult the GC routes are...and then throw in some weather...

So who else is coming this year?
cowboyz
you need to discover the world of cafe drinking. that will make the grand challenge more of a challenge for you.
