Full Version: radar detectors and the policeman

I have borrowed a valentine 1 and testing it at the moment. When I first hooked it up I rode through town and it went off like a xmas tree. Good. Its working.

The other day I was going to work and saw a cop but the detector didnt go off. ok. he must not have a radar on.

Then yesterday I was pootling to work and the detector went nuts for a couple of seconds then nothing. I didnt see anything and wasnt speeding so meh.

Then today I followed a cop all the way home and the detector didnt blip at all. Find it a little hard to believe a cop travelling down SH2 without his radar on.

How do I tell if it is actually working or not before its too late?

Is it common for police to travel round without thier machines on?

They sometimes have them in "instant-on". Had it happen on the way to Bulls a couple of weekends ago. In traffic and I could see the cop, the detector went off as he zapped some of the cars and then went off again. I guess it still pays to keep some traffic in front of ya sometimes...

I know it wasn't just the traffic interfering with as the detector went crazy in really heavy traffic on Tremaine Ave the other day well before I saw the cop car.

That was the trick the cops used in Hamilton when we went out on friday night rides etc, they will sit on the side of the road hiding, then flick the gun on and turn it off.
I guess its their way of stopping the detectors doing the job

Yep, and another is sit in unmarked cars on one of the best bits of motorcycle road in the country...

Heading to work this moring in the rain, me, Andrew and Dani blew past one this morning alittle too quick and he didn't even blink. Ok... quite a bit quick. When we got to the lights in town, Dani said her detector didnt go off at all. So I'd say they don't travel with them on all the time.

Don't forget not every cop car is a traffic patrol car. Usually only the ones with the yellow chevrons. The orange ones are general police vehicles. They still have the gear but don't always have it turned on.

Based on conversations with officers while I was applying replacement chevrons to cars that have been banged up.

good o then. I am actually hoping to get a full hit. I have had it on for 2 weeks and not a single alert from it. Would be really comforting to know it works.

A real silly point but are the settings set to city/highway or similar, therefore going ballistic in town but not in highway due to various false alarms with shop sensors etc.

Our one(whistler) is set so it rarely goes off in town, but on open road can give false alarm if bouncing off another detector, you get used to this, usually the give away is stregth of signal,it beeps once then stops false, beeps then signal goes up the scale so slow up.

I delibrately set it up for false alarms in town to see if I could hear it when it went off. I have it set on A all the time (which is alert all bogeys).
Meanie
Got my Bell XR set up and it hasnt given me a false alarm yet, but has saved my arse twice already

I must admit, on these frequent trips home from the centre of the universe the appearances by Mr Plod are becoming a some what monotonous.

Yea the buggers seem to come out of hiding when you least expect them

In the K band range you'll get false alerts off tractors of all things!

Also trucks are carrying radar jammers nowadays. They give off a weak Ka and K signal and will also trigger an alert.

SO if it goes off and a trucks passing you, ignore it but be wary.

You should be able to set it to exclude X band, which gives the most alerts, as its not used here in
NZ by Law enforcement Nazis, but devices using it are found in Door openers etc like gas stations.

You just need a little faith Cowboyz

Sooooo whos gonna change my flat tyre... I'll smile sweetly for you?

460k done today. saw 2 police on the motorway and neither set the detector off. In saying that, meanies detector only gave a blip as he went past later so looks like instant on is the order of the day.
