Death to thy CBR

So we got the CBR up and running again, our flatmate managed to balance the carbs, and that sorted out the issue with the bike running weirdly. Lauren and i headed out for a ride on Sunday, just a quick loop, only lasted about 30 mins or so, just to see if it was running alright. Great success! Bike was running mint.

So off i head to work, on the Hyosung, come back from work...on the Hyosung wink.gif Muckin round at home watching the latest episode of TopGear when i get a phone call from Lauren:
Lauren - "Im on the side of the road...bike has broken and all the oil is coming out..."
Matt - "...ah crap, i'll come find you"

Off i go in the car with no fuel, empty tank light flashing unsure.gif get about 1km away from Lauren and she rings me:
Lauren - "Dont worry a guy in a van pulled over and is giving me a ride home"
Matt - "ok, im nearly there, i'll spin around. Have you got the Bike?"
Lauren - "The bikes in the Van, hes gonna drop it off at home"
Matt - "Ok cool, cya at home"

I spin the car around, head back home. Arrive at home 10 minutes later and just as i get in the door the van pulls up. Out hops the guy, nice chap, very friendly, Rides a VTR1000 SP1. I give him a hand to pull the cbr out of the van and sure enough oil everywhere, all throughout the floor of his van and all down the side of the CBR...bugger.
Give the van a quick clean, say our thanks and he heads off on his way (Is going to manfield this weekend and so are we, am gonna bring him some beer).
Put the CBR in the garage with some towels etc underneath. Quick inspection reveals two quite large holes in the crankcase. Im guessing it was one of the Big End Bearings coming loose and forcing its way free. Cleaned up the oil on the driveway and took a couple of pics.
Not sure how easy it is to fix, but didn't come at the best time angry.gif

CBR400 engine mod anyone? wink.gif biggrin.gif

Update: Engine in pieces in the garage.. Hopefully i can put it back together, currently about 200 screws etc lying around on the floor.. in organised mess of course unsure.gif

Heres some photos showing the (well what matt thinks is called) the big end bearing (but he's not 100%).. but its the metal with screws that goes around the crank.. at the end of the conrod.. you'll be able to see.. (lovely explanation), and the other photo shows how i no longer have a conrod on the first cylinder. The middle picture is the 2nd cylinder showing what the bearing and conrod should look like tongue.gif

Yup i'm learning biggrin.gif As much as matt can teach me anyway.. hopefully i can member how to put it back together so theres no a huge mess all over the garage lol.

Yup, ima do that. And greg is gonna have a look for an engine.
They finished late yesterday so i didnt ask them to come have a look themselves.

Boyd Matt absolutely dominated coming 1st in all his Post Classic races, and i think 2nd or 3rd in the Super Light?
He was on fire... and absolutely stoked biggrin.gif

Alrighty, stole flatmates camera and took some better photos.

1) crank case upside down, 2nd and 3rd valve/piston/conrod/bearing how it should look.. 1st with no bearing, broken conrod and all the bore is scratched

2) closer view of damage to 1st big end bearing and crank shaft

3) even closer detail showing (not sure what brown semi circle things are called) the edge worn down.. none of the others are like this... probably the windlike noise i was hearing previously, slowly grinding it down..

4) see the huge hole at the back of the photo

5) my completely organised mess that i've made in the garage. (any one wanna play i spy in that?)

6) this is the hole in the crankcase at the bottom or top? of the bore

7) the other hole.. see i think this is the downward hole and the other was more upward? anyway theres two holes tongue.gif
